Good morning Beautiful, This week I'm on the road, currently in Orlando, Florida. One of my favorite things about being on the road is the quiet time to catch up on reading. I have been filling my cup with new knowledge and healthy tid bits to share! This morning Hibiscus has come to mind! Hibiscus tea exactly. I love herbal medicine and yes, it's as easy as a cup of tea! 3 cups per day of a strong brew brings medcinal value to those who sip away. Hibiscus or Red hibiscus, rosa-sinensis in Latin is said to be the flower of the Hindu Goddess Kali. Hibiscus has unique characteristics and medicinal values far beyond a cup of tea. It has a nice tangy and mildly fruity taste that pairs well with lemon. The tea can be drunk hot or cold and is most popular for it's ability to provide cardiovascular support. Hibiscus is a beautiful plant and can be found peppered with flowers of red, pink, yellow, white or even purple. It has long been used in traditional herbal medicine in India, Africa, Central America and China. It's very common in the Caribean where it has many uses and is readily available. According to multiple studies, hibiscus alleviates oxidative stress, protects the liver, balances glucose and insulin levels, and improves weight loss. With prediabetes and Type II diabetes on the rise this should become a staple in our pantry. Researchers tested a simple hot-water decoction (tea) from the leaves of Hibiscus trionum, and were able to examine its “antidiabetic, antilipidemic, and antioxidant effects.” The above study published in the journal Biomolecules delves into details about the relationship between oxidative stress, human metabolism, and diabetes, including its progression and possible complications. Warning it's a long read, LOL! The bottom line on this study, antioxidants can improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin and preserve the function of beta-cells, which are located in the pancreas to release and produce insulin. Meaning you do not have to suffer from pre-diabetes or type II diabetes!! I hope this news finds you happy & healthy!
