Mid-Month with Mazie - The Secret to Lasting Change
Published 11 months ago • 8 min read
Hello!
We’re now about six weeks into the new year—an ideal moment to pause and reflect. How’s it going? Are you making progress on the goals and intentions you set as the year began?
Whether you've been steadily moving forward or encountering roadblocks along the way, now is a great time to assess what’s working and what isn’t. Real, lasting change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time for new habits to solidify, and no matter how many times you need to reset, the good news is you can always begin again.
One step at a time
For transformation to take hold, we must take intentional, repeated action. Wishing for change or simply envisioning it isn’t enough. Change happens on a deep level—physically, neurologically, and behaviorally—before we see the external results. A recent experience on my daily walk reminded me of this truth.
Near my home, where I take my dog for a three-mile walk on a local trail. After a recent snowfall, I knew the trek would be tough, but we ventured out anyway. The streets and driveways had been plowed, making for an easy start. But as soon as I stepped onto the untouched trail, I hesitated. The powdery snow was exhausting—like walking through sinking sand. For a moment, I considered turning back.
Then, in the distance, I saw a black lab bounding through the snow, followed by its owner jogging behind. That small moment shifted my mindset. Renewed with determination, I continued forward. When I reached the point where she had passed, I noticed her footprints in the snow. I stepped into them, following the path she had carved. It was still challenging, but much more manageable.
By the next day, more people had traveled the trail, pressing down the snow. Each person’s footsteps helped define a clear path, making the walk progressively easier. Within a day or so, the once-difficult journey had transformed into a well-trodden trail.
This is exactly how change works in our minds. When we commit to something new, we create fresh neural pathways—connections that didn’t exist before. At first, it’s challenging. But through repetition, the pathway strengthens. If we’re inconsistent, or constantly switch approaches, those connections weaken, making it harder to sustain progress.
Imagine if every person on that trail had forged their own way instead of following an established path—no clear trail would have formed, and the struggle would have continued. The same applies to our habits. Repetition builds momentum, and eventually, what once felt difficult becomes second nature.
So if you’ve wavered on a goal this year, let this be a reminder that it’s never too late to start again. The beginning may be tough, but with persistence, the path gets easier. Soon enough, what once felt new will simply be a part of who you are.
Did you know you can use your felx Let’s chat. Schedule a call, and let’s discuss how we can work together to make this happen. You’ve got this, and I’m here to help you every step of the way!

Family time on the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy
Do you love Italy as much as I do?
From my flight attendant days on a layover
Here's my take on a favorite pasta dish yummy enough for even the pickiest eater and GF for when Alyssa comes over!
Best Damn Spaghetti Squash Puttanesca
Leave the squash in the shell and top with sauce for awesome presentation!
INGREDIENTS
1 large spaghetti squash 5 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil - evoo such as Colavita - my fav!
2 pints grape tomatoes 6 anchovy fillets, minced finely - do not omit! They’re healthy, salty and awesome!
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
4 garlic cloves, grated
1 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and chopped
⅓ cup capers
¼ cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
Garnish: grated Parmesan cheese (optional, unless you’re my children - then it’s never optional!)
PREPARATION
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Cut spaghetti squash in half lengthwise, and scoop out seeds, leaving the flesh intact.
3. Drizzle cut side with 2 tablespoons evoo, and season with salt and pepper. Place cut-side down on prepared baking sheet. Roast in a 375°F Oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted with no resistance.
4. Meanwhile, toss tomatoes with 2 tablespoons evoo, salt, and pepper. In the last 15 minutes of cooking, place tomatoes in the oven along with the squash for 15 minutes, or until blistered.
5. Remove squash and tomatoes from the oven and cool. With a fork, gently scrape the fragile squash strands into a mixing bowl.
6. Heat 2 teaspoons of evoo in a large saute pan. Add anchovies and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until anchovies melt into hot oil. Add garlic, olives, capers, and spaghetti squash. Gently toss together.
7. Fold in roasted tomatoes, parsley, and 1 tablespoon of evoo.
Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top (if using). Serve immediately.
